Salt & Light
Yesterday, at 2:55, I walked over to Cramp Elementary School to pick up kids for an after-school program at Urban Hope called Salt & Light. As I stood in the school yard, I didn't know what to expect because I wasn't sure which of the 40 children we invited would be coming. This is the third year for this program, and each year God seems to exceed my expectations more and more. Yesterday, God did exactly that! 24 children came to the first practice, and 5-6 more will be joining us next week.
You are the salt of the earth. But suppose the salt loses its saltiness. How can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything. It will be thrown out. People will walk all over it. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can’t be hidden. Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Salt & Light is a performance-based, discipleship group. Children who attended Camp Conquest and who want to know more about what following Jesus means are working together each week to learn how to perform to tell others about Jesus. They are also being challenged weekly to be Salt & Light at home and in school. They are given a “Light Up Your Life” booklet each week which gives them a challenge a day to read the Bible, pray with or for someone, and talk to someone about Jesus. At the same time, a group moms and ladies are working together to create props and costumes for the children and are learning how to be godly moms.
As I looked around the room, at least half of the children in attendance do not currently have family members regularly attending our church. What an amazing opportunity God has given us that we have direct contact with at least ten new families who could be transformed by the power of the Gospel.
Please be praying with us that God would use this focused time of discipleship with these kids to grow them into young men and women who fear God and follow Him wholeheartedly. Also, pray that God would reach through these kids into their families.
Here is our weekly schedule. Please stop and pray when you think about it for us each week on Thursday.
